Senior Software Engineer (EL1)

About the role

A frontline Federal Government client, represented by GoSourcing, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (EL1 level) to lead software development projects and provide technical leadership to a team of software engineers. The engineer is responsible for the quality and functionality of the software produced by the team, ensuring adherence to agreed development and security standards. The role is based in the capital city of a selected state or territory (QLD, ACT or VIC) and starts around 1 January 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and create software and technical designs for complex development solutions, and develop strategy for high-quality code and long-term maintenance of the code base.
• Lead the release and go-live production support and maintenance of the team's developments.
• Lead analysis, design, prototyping, unit testing and maintenance activities, and review technical requirements.
• Ensure compliance with endorsed software development methodologies and investigate and resolve complex ICT issues.
• Manage stakeholder relationships and contribute to business and strategic workforce planning.
• Prepare reports, briefs and corporate documentation and communicate technical findings.
• Manage staff through coaching, capability development, performance management and well-being support, and exercise appropriate delegation.

Required profile

• Senior level (EL1 equivalent); prior experience in government or a similar large-scale organisation preferred.
• Australian citizen able to obtain a baseline security clearance.
• Ability to monitor emerging technologies, advise on methods and tools, and take technical responsibility across software development, release, configuration and design.
• Candidates must provide a one-page pitch addressing all stated criteria.

Required skills

• Preferred: SAP S/4HANA, UI5, ABAP, Angular, Node.js, JavaScript.
• Software development, release and deployment, software configuration and software design at EL1 level.

Contract: initial 12 months, with extension terms up to 24 months. Working arrangements are hybrid, with onsite work expected for the first 6 weeks unless otherwise negotiated.
