Media Advisor – Communications & PR

About the role

The Media Advisor will amplify CSIRO’s scientific impact by managing the Media Centre, handling media enquiries, and creating compelling stories for earned and owned channels. You will work within a collaborative, flexible environment to raise the profile of Australia’s national science agency.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary liaison for media outlets, including out‑of‑hours phone and email handling.
• Upload and distribute media releases via CSIRO’s website and news wires such as Isentia.
• Provide advice and training to communication staff on media release content.
• Identify story opportunities and develop multi‑platform media campaigns aligned with strategic priorities.
• Support research units by pitching stories and crafting media releases, owned articles, social posts, videos and other multimedia content.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, communication, public relations or equivalent experience.
• Proven media‑relations experience in public relations or journalism.
• Strong news sense, storytelling ability and understanding of social and digital media.
• Ability to manage media requests, work flexible hours and collaborate across teams.

Required skills

• Media relations and public‑relations expertise.
• Experience using media monitoring/distribution platforms (e.g., Isentia).
• Writing and editing for press releases, articles, social and digital formats.

What we offer

• Location flexibility – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra or other negotiable sites.
• Annual salary AU$100,000 – AU$113,000 plus 15.4% superannuation.
• Indefinite full‑time permanent contract.
