Internal Auditor

About the role

The Hills Shire Council is seeking an Internal Auditor to strengthen its governance framework. Reporting to the General Manager, you will provide independent assurance across risk management, compliance and internal controls, working closely with the Executive Team and the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a risk‑based Internal Audit Strategy and multi‑year audit plan.
• Conduct operational and compliance audits across Council functions.
• Analyse audit findings and present actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
• Advise the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee on governance and risk matters.
• Collaborate with a small team, including a cadet, to ensure timely audit delivery.

Required profile

• Relevant bachelor’s degree (Auditing, Accounting, Commerce, Management or related).
• Professional audit qualification such as CPA or CA.
• Extensive experience in internal audit, risk and governance, preferably within government or local‑government environments.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to influence executive stakeholders.
• Self‑motivated, able to work independently and manage priorities with minimal supervision.
