Senior HR Officer – Flexible

About the role

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers is seeking a Senior HR Officer to provide expert advice on HR policies, procedures and legislation while supporting leaders and staff across the department. This flexible position offers the chance to influence HR outcomes, mentor junior officers and contribute to strategic workforce planning.

Key responsibilities

• Provide timely, accurate advice on HR policies, procedures and industrial instruments.
• Manage the HR Operations inbox, ensuring enquiries are addressed or escalated appropriately.
• Analyse workforce data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, and prepare management reports.
• Collaborate with HR leaders to develop training strategies and improve processes.
• Mentor and coach HR Officers, supporting their professional development.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare high‑quality correspondence, briefing notes, submissions and reports on HR operational matters.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of contemporary HR practices and workplace legislation.
• Proven experience providing HR advice and interpreting industrial instruments.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse data, identify trends and deliver actionable insights.
• Experience mentoring or coaching team members.
