Mechanical Engineer – Reliability & Maintenance

About the role

Whitehaven Coal is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Vickery Mine team. Reporting to the Maintenance Engineering function, you will help improve plant reliability, reduce unplanned downtime and support safe, efficient operation of site assets.

Key responsibilities

• Support reliability and maintenance improvement initiatives across fixed plant and site infrastructure.
• Investigate equipment failures and downtime events, identify root causes and drive permanent corrective actions.
• Develop and optimise maintenance strategies, standard jobs and procedures.
• Support condition monitoring programs including vibration analysis, oil analysis and equipment performance monitoring.
• Collaborate with OEMs, vendors, operations and maintenance teams to improve equipment performance and reliability.
• Assist with statutory compliance activities, audits and engineering documentation reviews.
• Provide technical mechanical engineering support to maintenance and operational teams.
• Analyse performance data and deliver reliability reporting to support business decision‑making.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum three years’ experience in mining, heavy industry, mineral processing or a similar environment.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving capability with a proactive continuous‑improvement mindset.
• Well‑developed analytical, reporting and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively across operational and technical teams.
• Desire to develop further within the mining industry and pursue statutory engineering qualifications.

Required skills

• Experience with CMMS platforms such as SAP or Pulse.
• Condition monitoring techniques including vibration analysis and oil analysis.
• Equipment performance monitoring and asset performance systems.
• Familiarity with NSW mining legislation and relevant Australian Standards.
