Financial Accounting Specialist (Hybrid)

About the role

Mackay Regional Council is seeking a Financial Accounting Specialist to support strong governance, smarter decision‑making and continuous improvement across the organisation. This temporary full‑time parental‑leave position runs for two years (until May 2028) and offers a hybrid work arrangement with an in‑office day each Thursday.

Key responsibilities

• Support key financial projects and end‑of‑year processing while maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance and governance.
• Lead complex financial investigations and reviews, delivering clear findings and recommendations.
• Coordinate the annual audit of Council’s accounts and respond to internal and external audit queries, including those from the Queensland Audit Office.
• Interpret and analyse financial data to provide specialist advice in line with legislation and accounting standards.
• Collaborate with Sustainability, Corporate Travel, Procurement and other corporate teams to streamline processes, strengthen controls and enhance service delivery.

Required profile

• Bachelor qualification in Finance or a related discipline (essential).
• CA or CPA qualification (desirable).
• 3–5 years’ experience in financial accounting, audit coordination or complex financial analysis.
• Proactive, highly detail‑oriented with strong analytical abilities.
• Effective communicator capable of building relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
• Demonstrated ability to identify improvement opportunities and support change.
