Senior AI Engineer

About the role

Zurich, a global insurance leader and one of Forbes' World's Best Employers, is hiring a Senior AI Engineer in its Technology team. You will join the ML/AI Engineering chapter and help build Zurich's agentic AI capability, including the shared services, engineering patterns and technical guardrails that move AI solutions from experimentation into safe, reliable production. This is a senior, hands-on role with scope to influence how AI is delivered across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate production-grade agentic AI solutions using large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, multi-agent orchestration, tool use and prompt engineering.
• Create reusable AI services, reference patterns and technical guardrails so squads can deliver AI solutions faster, consistently and safely.
• Set up evaluation pipelines, observability and cost controls to measure agent quality, reliability, performance and production run costs.
• Build secure APIs and integration services connecting large language models with enterprise platforms, with authentication, authorisation and data protection.
• Assess architecture and system design options, define service boundaries and integration approaches, and recommend on security, reliability, scalability and cost.
• Embed DevSecOps and secure-by-design practices through infrastructure as code, CI/CD automation, testing, least-privilege access, input validation and secrets management.

Required profile

• Significant software engineering experience, including hands-on design, build and operation of AI or large language model systems in production.
• Experience building AI agents with frameworks such as LangGraph, AWS Strands or AgentCore, Model Context Protocol and agentic AI patterns.
• Ability to influence technical outcomes without formal authority, and to lift capability through code review, pairing and mentoring.

Required skills

• Deep AWS engineering across Bedrock, AgentCore, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, RDS, SageMaker, ECS, S3 and IAM, with infrastructure as code via AWS CDK or Terraform.
• Full-stack engineering with TypeScript, Node.js and Python for backends, and React or Next.js for frontend.
• REST and GraphQL APIs, including OAuth, OIDC, JWT and IAM authentication.
• AI evaluation, guardrails, observability, cost management, MLOps, CI/CD automation, automated testing and security-first engineering.
