Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Arabic Philosophy

About the role

The University of Notre Dame Australia is hosting the Arabic team of the ERC Synergy project "Logic in Reverse Redux", which runs until 30 April 2031. The Arabic Tradition: Rational Sciences team seeks up to three postdoctoral researchers in medieval Arabic philosophy with a track record or interest in medieval logical texts and fallacy theory. Outcomes must be published open access. The position is fixed term for 3 years, full time, at Level B $121,739 plus 15% superannuation.

Key responsibilities

• Translate a corpus of medieval Arabic texts on fallacies, ideally as sole translator for assigned passages, about 150 pages over the three years.
• Transcribe texts not yet available electronically for the project's web-based database.
• Carry out primary research on the historical and cultural context of the texts and analyse Arabic fallacy theories, especially those relating to Aristotle's Sophistical Refutations.
• Collaborate with the University of Geneva team on AskSten, a virtual research environment.
• Take part in ERC grant activities, including conferences and workshops in the UK and Europe, and liaise with CNRS, the University of Lille and the University of Geneva.
• Attend fortnightly team seminars at the Broadway Campus.

Required profile

• Doctoral training in Arabic philosophy or medieval Islamic intellectual history, with evidence of research potential; a strong publication record is highly desirable.
• Valid Australian working rights or eligibility for international applicants seeking employment in Australia.

Required skills

• Research-level proficiency in the philosophical language of medieval Arabic.
• Proficiency in Arabic text entry and the ability to read and interpret medieval manuscripts.
• Desirable: background in digital humanities and facility in Latin, classical Greek, Hebrew or Syriac.
