Category Buyer

About the role

As a Category Buyer you will be responsible for securing essential goods for remote Aboriginal communities in Northern Australia, ensuring the best value and reliable supply. You will work closely with suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to optimise costs and support community development.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and negotiate supplier and contractor relationships to optimise costs and trading terms.
• Drive value through strategic sourcing, value engineering and risk management.
• Ensure category price integrity and validate pricing against market competition.
• Review and manage retail contracts and service provider agreements.
• Interpret sales reports and provide guidance to improve figures and customer engagement.
• Track inventory movement and recommend promotions, sales or price changes.
• Collaborate with Area Managers and the Pricing Department on store‑specific ranging and new business ideas.
• Travel to remote store locations via light aircraft or 4WD to review ranges and assist field teams.

Required profile

• Commercially minded professional with strong negotiation skills.
• At least three years of experience in retail buying or a similar procurement role.
• Proven expertise in contract management and high‑level negotiation.
• Strong analytical abilities and data‑driven problem‑solving.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for communicating with diverse stakeholders.
• Unrestricted NT driver’s licence and ability to travel to remote communities.

Required skills

• Intermediate proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
