Team Leader, Drafting – Rail & Metro

About the role

SMEC, a global engineering consultancy, is looking for an experienced Team Leader, Drafting – Rail & Metro to lead its drafting capability within the Melbourne Rail & Metro team. Based in the Melbourne office, you will lead and support a team of drafters across a diverse portfolio of projects, working alongside engineers, designers and project managers to deliver major rail and transport infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop the Rail & Metro drafting team, supporting individual development and career progression.
• Coordinate drafting resources and workloads across multiple projects with project managers and technical leaders.
• Provide technical leadership and oversight of drafting deliverables, ensuring quality, consistency and compliance with standards.
• Support project teams in delivering detailed design and construction documentation.
• Establish consistent drafting standards, workflows, templates and quality assurance processes.
• Drive continuous improvement in drafting and digital engineering practices.
• Support workforce and capability planning by identifying skills gaps and resourcing needs.
• Foster a collaborative team culture and build strong relationships across disciplines.
• Provide hands-on technical support on complex or high-priority deliverables.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience delivering drafting and digital engineering outcomes on Rail & Metro or major transport infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring drafting teams in multidisciplinary environments.
• Strong capability in workforce planning, resource coordination and balancing competing project demands.
• Extensive experience preparing, coordinating and reviewing detailed design and construction documentation.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and a genuine interest in coaching and developing people.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with industry software such as MicroStation, OpenRail, AutoCAD, Revit or similar platforms.
• Knowledge of drafting standards, quality assurance processes and digital delivery practices.
