Senior Scientist, Quantum Sensing (Magnetometry)

About the role

Q-CTRL is seeking a Senior Scientist to join its Quantum Sensing Research team. You will lead the Magnetometry Novel Hardware group, developing cutting‑edge quantum magnetometers for aerospace, defence, geophysical, and medical applications.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with physicists, electronics and software engineers to design, build and test state‑of‑the‑art quantum magnetometers and auxiliary hardware.
• Develop and characterise prototypes in the lab and in field trials, translating experimental results into engineering requirements.
• Identify performance‑limiting effects in harsh environments and devise mitigation strategies compatible with miniaturisation and deployment.
• Lead scientific commissioning, organise hardware development programmes and liaise with academic and industry partners.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent industry experience in atomic, molecular and optical physics or a closely related discipline.
• Hands‑on experience with quantum sensor hardware (lasers, optics, electro‑optical systems) and atomic sensor design, construction, operation and characterisation.
• Proven ability to work experimentally to improve sensor reliability in challenging environments.
• Strong communication skills for presenting results to diverse audiences.

Required skills

• Python for numerical simulations, data logging and analysis.
• Version control with GitHub and familiarity with Poetry.
• Experience with quantum magnetometers using alkali vapours (FID, NMOR, SERF) – desirable but not essential.
• Experience deploying quantum sensors in field settings – desirable but not essential.
