Senior Architect

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Architect to join our Sydney studio, leading projects from concept through construction. In this senior design position you will champion design excellence, guide design reviews and mentor project teams while upholding Watson Young’s values.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design of commercial, education and industrial projects, steering design reviews at critical phases.
• Manage project delivery end‑to‑end, including scope, schedule, resourcing and coordination with consultants.
• Conduct document reviews to ensure internal quality standards before issue.
• Identify and mitigate risks, negotiate fee variations and report progress to stakeholders.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships and facilitate open dialogue with consultants.
• Mentor and develop project team members, sharing expertise and fostering growth.
• Support senior staff in identifying and developing new business opportunities.
• Lead project debriefs and learning sessions to capture insights across the practice.

Required profile

• Registered Architect with senior‑level experience delivering complex projects from concept to completion.
• Background in commercial, education and/or industrial sectors.
• Strong technical knowledge of the NCC, relevant building codes and standards, and contract administration.
• Proven ability to lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement, presentation and negotiation skills.
• Commercial acumen with experience managing scope, timelines, resources and risk across multiple projects.
• Highly organised, proactive, adaptable and open to feedback.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the National Construction Code (NCC)
• Understanding of building codes and standards
• Contract administration experience
