Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Demography

About the role

The University of Queensland is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join its Queensland Centre for Population Research. The role will focus on developing a new micro‑simulation population projection model to assess the impacts of migration policy on Australia’s population, labour force and housing demand.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a micro‑simulation population projection model using census, survey and administrative data.
• Apply advanced quantitative and statistical methods, and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Collaborate with academic colleagues, postgraduate students, government agencies and international partners, and present results at conferences.
• Prepare and deliver lectures, develop workshop materials, and support student learning (≈10% of time).
• Supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students and contribute to researcher development activities.
• Participate in centre, school and university activities, and help build external partnerships with government and industry.

Required profile

• Completion or near‑completion of a PhD in Demography, Geography, Economics, Quantitative Sociology or a related discipline.
• Strong interest in migration research and policy.
• Demonstrated quantitative and analytical abilities.
• Experience with large‑scale administrative datasets (e.g., PLIDA).
• Knowledge of population projections or micro‑simulation techniques.
• Emerging research record with publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Excellent communication and time‑management skills.

What we offer

• Fixed‑term contract up to four years (Academic Level A) with a salary range of AUD 83,699–111,431 per year plus superannuation.
