Financial Accountant

About the role

Sonder is seeking a technically strong Financial Accountant to own end‑to‑end financial controllership for its Australian, New Zealand and UK entities. Reporting directly to the Financial Controller and CFO, you will ensure compliance, statutory filings and month‑end close are executed with precision across multiple jurisdictions.

Key responsibilities

• Own all compliance and statutory filings (BAS, VAT/IRD, payroll tax, FBT, TPAR, superannuation, Workcover, Maxxia) for AU, NZ and UK, ensuring timely and accurate submission.
• Drive month‑end close for payroll, compliance and expense activities, delivering reconciliations, accruals and commentary within five business days.
• Review payables prepared by the Bookkeeper and provide cash‑flow commentary to support financial decision‑making.
• Maintain audit readiness by upholding internal controls, governance frameworks and supporting external audit processes.
• Oversee the Bookkeeper’s administration of expense platforms (Weel and Navan) and deliver management commentary on expenses and payables.
• Assist with revenue reconciliations and debtors reporting during peak periods or when coverage is needed.

Required profile

• 3–5 years experience in financial accounting, audit or assurance, preferably with payroll, compliance and statutory reporting exposure.
• Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CA/CPA qualified or working towards qualification.
• Strong knowledge of month‑end close processes, statutory filings and multi‑entity accounting.
• Background in a Big Four or mid‑tier professional services firm with multi‑jurisdiction experience (AU, NZ, UK) is highly regarded.
• Permission to work in Australia.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Xero or NetSuite accounting systems.
• Advanced Excel skills.
