Coal Technician – Sample Collection & Analysis

About the role

Join SGS Australia as a Coal Technician, supporting the Energy Minerals Division with accurate sample collection, preparation and analysis for coal handling and processing plants (CHPP) and train operations. You will work in a fast‑paced laboratory environment where precision and safety are essential to meet Australian and international testing standards.

Key responsibilities

• Execute precise coal sampling, preparation, analysis and reporting while maintaining the highest accuracy standards.
• Maintain complete traceability and integrity of all samples throughout the testing process.
• Support maintenance and optimal performance of laboratory and preparation equipment.
• Promote a safety‑first culture by identifying hazards and escalating unsafe or faulty equipment.
• Coordinate daily tasks, sample logistics and testing schedules to ensure on‑time delivery.
• Communicate effectively with incoming and outgoing shift teams to ensure seamless knowledge transfer.

Required profile

• Experience in coal sampling, preparation and testing or a mineral laboratory environment (preferred but not essential).
• Ability to work a 7/7 rotating day and night roster in remote locations.
• Current Australian manual driver’s licence (preferred) and Standard 11 certification.
• Willingness to meet pre‑employment medical and fitness‑for‑work requirements.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
