Associate Engineer – Bridges & Structures

About the role

SMEC is seeking an Associate Engineer – Bridges & Structures to join its Townsville team. The role combines technical leadership with client engagement, driving the delivery of high‑profile bridge and transport infrastructure projects across Australia.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and review structural designs for bridges, retaining walls and complex transport infrastructure.
• Guide multidisciplinary teams to deliver engineering outcomes on time, within budget and to quality standards.
• Oversee project delivery, ensuring compliance, robust design and client satisfaction.
• Develop and maintain relationships with key clients and stakeholders.
• Contribute to business development, strategic planning and team resourcing.
• Mentor junior engineers through coaching and knowledge transfer.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• 10+ years of experience in structural bridge design, preferably within the Australian transport sector.
• Proven track record delivering large‑scale projects exceeding $1M.
• Strong project‑management capabilities, including budgeting, scheduling and risk mitigation.
• Excellent technical writing skills for high‑quality reporting.
