About the role

The Career Medical Officer provides independent medical expertise within the after‑hours mental health service at Royal Hobart Hospital. Working closely with consultant psychiatrists and senior staff, you will deliver acute psychiatric care to patients referred from the Emergency Department and to inpatient mental health units.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and manage patients referred from the Emergency Department to Mental Health Services.
• Provide medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units, including the Short Stay Unit.
• Attend to mental health patients throughout the hospital who require specialist medical input.
• Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and ensure all medical decisions are recorded.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and respond promptly to clinical calls.
• Prescribe, administer, and document medications and treatments in accordance with best practice.
• Participate in discharge planning and ensure continuity of care.
• Comply with professional, ethical, and legal obligations, including the Tasmanian Mental Health Act.

Required profile

• Substantial experience in General Adult/Acute Psychiatry.
• Previous work in an Emergency Department is desirable.
• Ability to work with a high level of professional independence while being accountable to the Clinical Director.
• Strong communication skills for liaison with consultant psychiatrists and multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and management of acute psychiatric presentations.
• Accurate clinical documentation and prescribing.
• Knowledge of the Tasmanian Mental Health Act and relevant legal frameworks.
