Accountant – Financial Accounting & Tax Specialist

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Accountant to join our finance team at Afrimat Nkomati Anthracite in Mpumalanga. The role involves managing core accounting functions, tax compliance, and supporting operational management.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain general ledger accounts and perform month‑end checks.
• Calculate taxes, prepare tax returns and ensure compliance with South African tax laws.
• Manage the fixed assets register and produce cash‑flow forecasts.
• Oversee and mentor the accounts team, providing guidance as needed.
• Develop and maintain internal control systems and suggest process improvements.
• Liaise with internal and external auditors during audits and assist with BBBEE audit preparation.
• Handle workflow processes including purchase orders, invoicing, payments, and reconciliations.
• Provide ad‑hoc support to operational management.

Required profile

• Grade 12 and a relevant degree with SAIPA or CIMA articles.
• Minimum two years of experience in financial accounting.
• Proficient English communication skills.
• Ability to work independently under pressure and manage priorities.
• Strong knowledge of South African tax legislation and accounting standards.
• Self‑starter with high accuracy and attention to detail.
• Medically fit in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act.

Required skills

• Advanced Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with the X3 ERP system (advantageous).
