Navy Lawyer – Military & Civilian Law Specialist

About the role

The Australian Navy is seeking qualified lawyers to provide specialist legal advice across both civilian and military law. You will support Navy Command by advising on discipline, administrative matters and operational law, while also representing the service in courts‑martial and defence inquiries.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver expert legal counsel on military discipline, administrative law and operations law.
• Act as advocate or defence counsel in Defence inquiries, courts‑martial and magistrate trials.
• Prepare legal opinions, briefs and policy documents for senior Navy leadership.
• Assist with the development and implementation of legal frameworks and procedures.

Required profile

• Australian citizen, aged 17 or older at enlistment.
• Hold a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD).
• Admitted to practice in an Australian Supreme Court and hold a current practising certificate (or be eligible to obtain one immediately).
• Minimum 12 months experience as a solicitor, barrister or lawyer.

Required skills

• Strong legal research and analytical abilities.
• Excellent advocacy and courtroom presentation skills.
• Knowledge of military law and procedures.
