Legal Counsel – Music & Entertainment

About the role

Universal Music Australia is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its Legal & Business Affairs team on a 12‑month contract. Reporting to the SVP, you will provide strategic and day‑to‑day legal support across A&R, Digital and Brand Partnerships, helping the business navigate artist deals, digital platforms and commercial agreements.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, negotiate and advise on artist recording, licence, producer, mixer, remixer and guest artist agreements.
• Support A&R teams through contract approval processes and ensure compliance.
• Advise the Digital team on platform agreements, influencer contracts and campaign structures, liaising with global UMG teams.
• Negotiate and draft agreements for strategic brand partnerships, promotions and marketing campaigns.
• Provide practical legal advice on commercial, intellectual property, privacy and media matters.
• Conduct legal research, maintain rights management systems and coordinate approvals with international UMG offices.

Required profile

• 2–4 years post‑qualification experience in private practice or in‑house.
• Commercially astute lawyer comfortable in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
• Experience in music, media, entertainment, IP or general commercial law is highly regarded.
• Strong relationship‑building skills with internal stakeholders.
