Family Law Advice Lawyer – Southport

About the role

The Family Law Advice Lawyer will provide expert legal advice and information on family law matters to clients and prisoners, supporting Legal Aid Queensland’s mission to deliver accessible justice.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and information on family law matters, including child protection, domestic and family violence, to clients and prisoners via phone, video conference and face‑to‑face.
• Explain legal options and refer clients to appropriate agencies when necessary.
• Prepare minor assistance documents such as letters and submissions.
• Advise Legal Aid Queensland staff on merit assessments for legal aid grants, completing checklists and recommending aid.
• Maintain legal content in the information database, advice toolkit, guides and precedents.
• Support policy, procedure, law reform and service delivery initiatives and contribute to team planning.
• Liaise with justice system stakeholders and Legal Aid Queensland regarding client matters.
• Provide information to staff and external stakeholders to raise awareness of advice services.

Required profile

• Knowledge of family law practice and procedure, including child protection, domestic and family violence law.
• Understanding of ethical standards and relevant civil law areas.
• Clear, concise communication skills, able to tailor information for clients with complex needs using trauma‑informed practice.
• Ability to prepare written submissions, letters and resources.
