Data Architect

About the role

The Data Architect will shape and implement UNSW’s enterprise data architecture, ensuring secure, scalable, and interoperable data capabilities across the university. Reporting to the Director of Data Transformation, this role works closely with Enterprise Architecture, IT, and Cyber Security to translate complex business needs into sustainable data solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design, architecture, and management of UNSW’s enterprise data platforms in line with the Data & AI Strategy.
• Act as principal technical advisor for data initiatives, managing technology risk and remediation of audit and cyber‑security findings.
• Define standards for data classification, retention, and transformation to support governance and analytics.
• Partner with IT and Cyber Security to deploy secure, resilient data solutions while maintaining governance ownership.
• Provide expert advice to senior leaders, manage vendor performance, contracts, and budgets.
• Collaborate with the IT architecture team to align data models, integration patterns, and platform capabilities with the university’s strategic direction.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Data Engineering.
• Extensive experience leading enterprise‑scale data platform environments and large‑scale transformation projects.
• Deep expertise in modern data architecture and engineering practices.
• Proven track record operationalising secure, scalable, repeatable data solutions in complex, matrixed institutions.
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive data‑driven change.
