Clinical Nurse Consultant – Mental Health (Youth Detention)

About the role

The Department of Justice is seeking a Clinical Nurse Consultant specialising in Mental Health to provide operational and clinical leadership at the Banksia Hill Youth Detention Centre. You will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager and the Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs (MHAOD) team to deliver high‑quality mental health care to young people in a secure environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead clinical service delivery and collaborate with the Clinical Nurse Manager on policy, protocols and assessment tools.
• Conduct specialised mental health, alcohol and other drugs assessments for detained youth.
• Monitor compliance with relevant policies, standards and procedures.
• Facilitate referrals to community health providers and forensic mental health services.
• Participate in service planning, quality improvement and cultural reform initiatives.
• Maintain effective communication with the Youth Justice System and external health partners.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with current registration in Australia.
• Significant experience in mental health nursing, preferably with youth or forensic populations.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement clinical policies and protocols.
• Strong understanding of governance frameworks and accountability standards.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
